I recently had a good conversation with a close friend regarding the reporting of The Toughest Beat website. We started this website to provide factual information regarding criminal justice and corrections. Everyone has a bias to include the authors for The Toughest Beat. My friend indicated our personal bias has shown itself in our reporting.
After some reflection, I agree with my friend’s comments. We want The Toughest Beat to be a trusted source of information, and our bias should be minimized. In future articles we will continue to report the facts and offer opinions based on factual reporting with less prejudice. We will also continue to post only information which has been verified.
We are aware all journalism contains some bias of perspective. Bias exists no matter where you get your news. To better explain our commentary, I will lay out our personal bias: We are very pro-law enforcement and officer safety. When we offer our opinions in our articles, we will do our best to minimize the bias, but where it exists you can know where we come from. We are not anti-offender, but we believe public safety should take precedence over inmate freedoms.
In short, The Toughest Beat aims to provide factual reporting on items impacting the corrections profession. There is always some bias in commentary, but we will do our best to minimize this.
