On March 20, 2024, an inmate at California’s Salinas Valley State Prison attempted to murder two correctional officers. The inmate was housed in the prison’s restrictive housing unit, slipped his handcuffs and stabbed two correctional officers with an inmate-manufactured weapon.

Restrictive housing is not the solitary confinement like you see in movies, but when inmates are moved, they are required to be handcuffed and escorted. Inmate Kefvon Camp slipped out of his handcuffs using an inmate-manufactured key, retrieved a weapon from his person and started stabbing the escorting officer. When another officer rushed in to subdue Camp, the inmate started stabbing this officer. Eventually Camp was restrained.

Additional inmate-manufactured weapons were discovered during a search of Inmate Camp’s cell. Parts from a fan was used to manufacture the makeshift handcuff key.
