The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation released much media hype behind “Prison Palooza” held at the California Medical Facility (CMF) in Vacaville, California. The event was one of many prison events held inside of California Prisons to make inmates happier. What CDCR does not publicly admit is the increasing violence inside its prisons.
Prison Palooza held entertainment for the inmates to include music, horses, and games. CDCR uses events like this to tout the California Model of prison management which is structured around giving inmates more freedoms and more entertainment. The Prison Palooza event was held at CMF on September 27, 2024. The Toughest Beat would like to make public some other activity occurring inside of the same prison on the same day as Prison Palooza:
On September 27, 2024, at CMF, at about 0815 hours, Inmate Ulises Delatorre attacked and battered a correctional officer. Force was required to stop Inmate Delatorre’s attack.
On September 27, 2024, at CMF, at about 0830 hours, Inmate Geremy Ewell set up officers by stating he had a medical condition. The officers let Ewell out of his cell and the inmate attacked the officers, grabbing one officer’s neck. Force was required to stop Inmate Ewell’s attack.
On September 27, 2024, at CMF, Inmate Jared McEssy was found to be in possession of an inmate-manufactured weapon.
On September 27, 2024, at CMF, at about 1800 hours, Inmate Charley Griffin attacked a correctional officer by throwing an unknown liquid (gassing) on the officer. Inmate Griffin further resisted the officers attempt to gain custody and force was ultimately needed to control the situation.
We at the Toughest Beat wish CDCR was more transparent about the increased violence staff face in California prisons. The Toughest Beat also wishes CDCR would give up on the California Model silliness and incorporate scienced-back models of prison management.
