CDCR: Inmate, 21, beaten to death at substance abuse treatment facility

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is investigating the death of an inmate as a homicide.

Officials say officers at the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility in Corcoran found 21-year-old Inmate Shawn Jackson Jr. unresponsive around 1:30 pm on July 18.

Medical staff was called and he was taken to a nearby hospital in Hanford, where he later died.

Investigators later determined that 31-year-old Inmate Jarvis Richerson had attacked Jackson.

Authorities say the Office of the Inspector General and Office of Internal Affairs were notified.

The Kings County coroner will determine Jackson’s official cause of death.

According to officials Jackson was received from Orange County on September 20, 203 to serve four years for pimping before death.

Richerson was received originally in July 2015 but had been in and out before finally being sentenced to 8 years in December 2023 for rape with force, corporal injury, and assault with a firearm.
