It is very unfortunate, but California correctional officers get battered on almost a daily basis. Most of these violent attacks against officers are reported internally, however not reported to the public. Rarer are non-correctional officer batteries, these are more often known to the public.

For example, on one day this week (March 5), at one prison, CSP-Sacramento, two correctional officers and one nurse were battered in separate incidents. The correctional officer attacks were not released to the public, but the attack on the nurse was. In this case an inmate sexually battered a nurse on the level IV EOP yard near the health building.

The news report of the sexual battery at CSP-Sac included the following statement: “This is the second reported assault on an employee by an inmate within a month.” This is a vast under reporting of the tremendous amount of inmate attacks which happen weekly in the CDCR prison system. Although this news agency (CBS13) knew of two employee attacks by inmates, this author knows of multiple inmate-on-officer batteries and inmate-on-officer assaults. The inmate violence within CDCR is purposely under reported.

Correctional officers know violence is part of the job when they enter the prison gates, however it should never be a routine matter these officers are often victims to violence. CDCR needs to be more transparent regarding the level of violence CDCR officers face daily.

  1. Just to give accurate numbers: For March 5, 2024 (the date referenced in this article), CDCR had five correctional officers battered by inmates and two free staff batteries. Of course CDCR does not have a blotter or other tool to inform the public about how violent inmates are; we have to pretend everything is great here.
