On November 28 CDCR released the results of an internal survey. Several months prior, the Department requested its staff to complete an anonymous survey of working conditions for CDCR. The results show some interesting numbers:

  • 34% of respondents listed “lack of communication from leadership” as the most challenging job aspect.
  • 34% of respondents listed “treatment of people by leaders” as the most challenging job aspect.
  • 34% of respondents listed “work-related stress” as the most challenging job aspect.
  • 42% of Custody Staff/Peace Officer respondents said they would not recommend CDCR as an employer.
  • 33% of the respondents said they disagreed CDCR’s prison environment supports staff wellness.

With 2/3 of the respondents explaining CDCR leadership is a problem, the Department may wish to start hiring real leaders instead of the nepotism the Department currently uses to hire management.

  1. CDCR needs to hire leaders. The good-old-boy system we have now means a lot of bad apples in management.
