Tuesday afternoon, June 6, 2024, a CDCR Correctional Sergeant was attacked by an inmate at Ironwood State Prison. During the evening yard the inmate blindsided the sergeant by attacking him while his back was turned. The inmate was housed on a level 2, non-designated yard despite the inmate’s ties to white prison gangs. The inmate also was serving time for two other battery on a peace officer changes, one from San Diego County the other from Riverside County.

The sergeant was evaluated by medical and was sent home due to his injuries. Multiple force options were used to subdue the attacking inmate.

  1. Follow up:
The inmate’s name is Virgil Howard III (41). The inmate was classified as a level 3 inmate, housed on this non-designated level 2 facility. CDCR has many level 3 and level 4 inmates housed on level 2 yards in an effort to make the “non-designated” program appear to be working.

  2. This punk inmate was upset when the sergeant informed him he would get a counseling chrono for being out of bounds. The inmate, used to getting his way, was told he was getting the chrono then rushed the Seargent. These inmates are too used to getting their way under the “hug-a-thug” movement in CDCR.
