Two Department of Correction employees were injured Wednesday during an assault involving an inmate who had a makeshift blade at a correctional center in Suffield.
The inmate, who has not been identified, refused to return to his cell and became combative around 7:40 a.m. in the MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution, according to the DOC.
As correction officers tried to apply wrist restraints to the inmate he attempted to strike multiple staff members, the DOC said. The prisoner also had a makeshift weapon in his hand that was described as a sharpened piece of metal. Prison staff were able to quickly take control of the weapon before the inmate was placed in the facility’s Restrictive Housing Unit, the DOC said.
“During recall of the unit, the inmate refused to return to his cell and attempted to stab the responding officer and a lieutenant using a shank. The shank did not puncture the responding officer. However, he sustained facial injuries from being punched several times,” said Collin Provost, president of AFSCME Local 391 which represents 1,400 state corrections employees.
A correctional lieutenant and officer received onsite medical attention, according to the DOC.
Provost said in a statement that more posts are needed and have been requested to reduce the rise and severity of injuries to corrections staff and inmates.
