The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) has released the October 2024 incident report numbers. Inmate attacks on staff increased from the previous month with October having 301 instances of inmates battering staff members and 54 instances of inmates assaulting staff members. According to CDCR, there was only one attempted homicide of a peace officer in October.

The below chart depicts the rising trend of staff attacks by CDCR inmates. The bar graph shows the decreasing trend in inmate population and the line graph shows the violence against CDCR staff as a percentage of the inmate population. We chose May 2023 as the starting point of this chart as that is when COVID-19 was assumed to be over.

  1. CDCR) has fully embraced a model of prison management based on no criminological principles. CDCR inmates and staff are less safe thanks to the new idea of prison management.
    The aptly named California Model of prison management is based on warm fuzzy feelings and not on any science or research. This bad prison management model may be a contributor to the increase of inmate murders within CDCR this year.

      Although only some CDCR prisons are “officially” CA Model prisons; all CDCR institutions are expected to embrace the CA Model of prison management.
