Several staff members at Rhode Island’s Adult Correctional Institutions (ACI) were injured during an incident involving an inmate over the weekend.
An inmate at the medium-security facility assaulted two correctional officers after refusing to return to his cell early Sunday morning. The officers used pepper spray to try to get the situation under control; the OC spray slickened the floor, which caused four other officers to slip and fall.
All six officers required medical treatment, according to Richard Ferruccio, president of the R.I. Brotherhood of Correctional Officers.
“Assaults and violence have significantly increased at the ACI over the last several months, jeopardizing the safety of staff and the inmate population,” Ferruccio added.
