On Saturday, May 25, 2024, Inmates Robert Ortega and Juan Gomez attacked a correctional officer at Kern Valley State Prison. Staff utilized several applications of pepper spray and a direct-impact 40mm less-lethal round to stop the attack. This attack by the two inmates appeared to be unprovoked as the officers involved were conducting a routine building recall at the time of attack.
