On July 15, at about 1330 hours, at High Desert State Prison, two inmates occupying the same cell set a trap in an attempt to kill at least one correctional officer. Inmates George (BS9873) and Sheridan (AP1700) were in a cell together and informed staff they were suicidal. The inmates, who had covered their cell window even uncovered the window partially to show both inmates had nooses around their necks.

Staff formed emergency extraction teams to enter the cell and when they made entry, they were attacked by the inmates who attempted to strike the officers several times. Inmate George was able to grab an officer by the neck and applied pressure in an attempt to choke the officer. Officers used force and baton strikes to eventually force the inmates into restraints.

When later being escorted into a holding cell and while still strained, Inmate George kicked at the officers and ended up striking one officer.

Two correctional officers were transported to an off-site hospital for their injuries and were later released. Inmates George and Sheridan were noted with minor injuries.
