Salinas Valley State Prison inmate seriously injures several staff

5.0.2

Monday, August 18 was a difficult day for the staff at Salinas Valley State Prison. At about 1015 hours there was a riot at the prison where some inmates used weapons on each other resulting in a few inmates with puncture wounds. Later an inmate injured several custody officers.

At about 1200 hours, Inmate Martin Cazares (BS6267) decided not to return to his cell and, without provocation, attacked an officer. The officer lost consciousness from Cazarez’ assault and then the inmate attacked another officer. The second officer was knocked to the floor and Cazares was able to steal the officer’s pepper spray. Cazares used the pepper spray to further attack the second officer dosing the officer’s face. Other officers responded and were able to secure Cazares in handcuffs.

Cazares wasn’t done attacking staff this day. At about 2100 hours, the inmate was being rehoused into the Restricted Housing Unit when he headbutted one officer and kicked another officer. After some struggle, the officers were able to regain control of Cazares and house him in the unit.

Remember there are a few hundred staff attacks by CDCR inmates every month. Staff attacks by inmates have been increasing despite the reduction in prison population. Stay safe and watch your partner’s 6.

  1. Where was the gunner? It’s remarkable that much damage was done. Yeah and I know it’s a California Model which is a joke!
