Attempted murder of North Kern State Prison Correctional Officer

North Kern State Prison (NKSP) is investigating an attack on a correctional officer on Oct. 28.

At 0852 hours, an officer was monitoring dayroom activities in Facility D when an inmate approached her from behind and wrapped his arms around her neck, restricting her airway. Other inmates intervened, pulling his arms away from the officer’s neck and forcing him to the ground.

Responding officers placed the inmate in handcuffs and escorted him to a holding cell. He was medically evaluated, and no injuries were identified. The incarcerated person was later re-housed in a restricted housing unit.

The officer was taken to the institution’s Treatment and Triage Area before being transported by ambulance to an outside medical facility for a higher level of care.

No staff sustained serious injury. The officer was treated and released from the hospital.
