Daily, the staff who work for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation are assaulted, battered or worse. Staff attacks by inmates are an underreported yet a daily occurrence. Alarmingly, staff attacks have been increasing over the past few months as CDCR forces institutions to give inmate more freedoms under the California Model of prison management. Due to politics, CDCR is not forthcoming with information from staff attacks.
Although CDCR is not transparent with information regarding serious staff attacks, The Toughest Beat was informed of two recent attempted murders of CDCR officers:
On September 28, 2024, at about 1700 hours, at Corcoran State Prison, Inmate Sutton threw a liquid substance on a correctional officer (gassing). When a supervisor arrived, Sutton threw a liquid substance on the Sergeant. After these filthy attacks, the inmate hid in his cell and covered his cell windows preventing staff from seeing inside. Staff made an entry into the cell and Inmate Sutton attacked the responding officers with an inmate-manufactured slashing/stabbing weapon. One officer was struck in the face and was taken to an outside hospital.
On October 2, 2024, at about 1800 hours, At California State Prison Los Angeles (Lancaster) Inmate Leuelu attacked and attempted to kill a correctional officer during the meal program. Leuelu used an inmate-manufactured weapon (piece of Lexan) to stab the officer in the back of his head and neck. The officer was taken to an outside hospital.
