The Georgia Department of Corrections confirms an inmate has died as a result of an altercation on Saturday, May 25. As of now, two inmates and an officer have been charged in relation to the incident.

Investigators said the death of inmate Roderick Hayes is being investigated by the department of corrections. Hayes was serving a 10-year sentence for cruelty to children out of Fulton County.

Hayes’ body has been turned over to the Richmond County coroner and will be taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s medical examiner to determine the official cause of death.

In connection to the incident, a Georgia Department of Corrections officer has been arrested and fired. Officer Lloyd Hopkins has been charged with party to the crime of murder, party to the crime of aggravated assault and violation of oath of office.

Two inmates, Brendon Moore and Andy Ulysse are charged with murder.

Roderick Hayes’ family tells FOX54 they want answers about their loved one’s death, more than anything.

In a statement, the GDC said it “maintains a zero tolerance policy for individuals who choose to ignore their oath and jeopardize our non-negotiable mission of public safety. The actions of this individual does not reflect the hundreds of officers who are committed each and every day to ensuring the safety of the public and the safe operations of our facilities.”
