On March 09, at 0749 hours, at Pelican Bay State Prison, an inmate attacked a peace officer with a weapon resulting in serious bodily injury to the inmate.
In Pelican Bay State Prison’s Restricted Housing Unit (RHU) Inmate Jeremy Delphin (AK6169) was being escorted from a holding cell following a cell search. As officers directed Delphin to step out, the inmate began yelling and struck one of the officers in the right shin with his medical cane. Another officer immediately activated his Personal Alarm Device and gave orders to get down while the battered officer utilized physical force to push Delphin to the ground. Delphin landed on his side and began violently flailing his legs and twisting his body and despite orders, refused to relinquish the cane (weapon).
Ultimately officers utilized several strikes with their fists, knees, and batons to stop Delphin’s violent actions and safely secure the inmate in handcuffs. (Delphin was able to slip out of his waist chain handcuffs during the altercation.)
Delphin was medically evaluated and subsequently transported to an outside hospital for higher level of care. Staff were medically evaluated, noting minor injuries to three officers, they elected to remain on duty. Medical staff determined Delphin had 2 fractured ribs, a fractured nose, and a partially collapsed lung.
