Attempted murder of a Peace Officer at Centinela State Prison

On April 30, 2026, a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) inmate used an edged weapon in an attempt to kill a peace officer at Centinela State Prison.

At about 1320 hours, Inmate Michael Stewart (C60552) appeached a Correctional Counselor in her office (Correctional Counselors are peace officer employees and often have an office located in an inmate housing unit.). As the counselor opened the door, Stewart handed the counselor a piece of paper. As the counselor began to read the paper, Stewart, without provocation, rushed into the office and began to batter and cut the counselor. The counselor sustained injuries to her face, neck and upper body.

After battering, cutting, and slamming the counselor on the floor, Inmate Stewart assumed a prone position on the floor. Stewart was taken into custody by responding staff and an inmate-manufactured slashing weapon was recovered from the crime scene.
