Multiple officers attacked in in incident at CDCR prison in Lancaster

California State Prison – Los Angeles County – On September 14, 2024, at about 1945 hours, Inmates Jermonta Bowers and Kwabente Smith attacked and battered multiple correctional officers. During this attack several other inmates were observed exiting their cells and refusing orders to “get down.” Staff called for a “code 3” response and officers used physical force, baton strikes, and chemical agents to stop Inmate Bowers and Smith’s attack.

After the attack was stopped and order was restored, the responding staff members were medically evaluated. Five (5) of the involved officers needed a higher level of medical care and were transported to an outside hospital. One (1) officer sustained a broken thumb, one (1) officer sustained a broken arm, and one (1) officer sustained a concussion. Three other officers had minor injuries.

Both Inmates Bowers and Smith were rehoused into restrictive housing.

Later, at about 2049 hours at least 12 inmates began to fight each other inside of a building at the prison. Staff called for a “code 2” response for this incident and were required to use chemical agents, grenades, and 40mm projectiles to quell this large fight. This fight was of special concern due to many staff still being off the facility due to the prior staff attack.
