Attempted Escape by California Correctional Institution Inmate

On March 09, at 1215 hours, a California Correctional Institution inmate attempted to take an officer’s firearm and escape custody.

While on a scheduled medical appointment outside of the institution, Inmate Richard Collins (H31441) was being seen by a medical provider. The officers were in the process of changing Collins’ restraints when the inmate pulled away from one officer and attempted to grab the officer’s firearm. The escorting officers used physical force to successfully restrain Collins back in handcuffs.

No staff were seriously injured during the escape attempt.
