How we get our information

We at The Toughest Beat aim to provide factual information on current news related to the corrections industry. We report heavily on the California Department of Corrections (CDCR) and Rehabilitation because we get most of our information from this department.

Recently we have received many messages asking why we don’t provide more information related to CDCR cases. Several people have guessed that at least one author for The Toughest Beat currently works for CDCR. We want to provide an answer why we cannot provide detailed information in some situations.

When we started The Toughest Beat, all members worked for CDCR. Although it would be easy to use the department’s databases to provide detailed information, this would have been and continues to be an ethical problem. We will not use our current or past positions with CDCR to gain information for articles on this website. We rely on publicly available information and information provided by readers.

We were also asked why we do not report on every staff attack. The Toughest Beat really appreciates receiving information from its readers, but there are two reasons we do not make an article for every reported staff attack. 1. There are too many to report, every day in CDCR there are multiple attacks on staff, we attempt to report on the most serious attacks only. 2. Sometimes we cannot validate the information provided, we attempt to have at least two reliable sources before we post an article.

I hope this clears some things up. As always, stay safe out there and watch your partners back.
