Pelican Bay State Prison inmates attempt to stab correctional officers

On Wednesday, August 13, an inmate at the Pelican Bay State Prison attempted to stab correctional officers with an inmate-manufactured weapon.

At about 1400 hours, a correctional sergeant was outside the door for a cell occupied by Inmates Jermie Hoover (BX0636) and Jonathan Romero (AX3399). While still inside of the cell, Hoover attempted to stab the sergeant through the open cuff port. (The cuff port is a square opening in a cell door to pass items through and to allow for handcuffing an inmate prior to opening the door.) The sergeant was able to narrowly avoid the attack by Hoover.

After some applications of pepper spray, Hoover and Romero relinquished three inmate-manufactured weapons from the cell and submitted to being handcuffed.

One officer was injured while recovering the weapons, no additional staff were injured.
