There is a lot of misinformation presented as fact when people talk about prison operations. As a scholar in the forensics field, I often heard from my professors that most inmates are in prison for narcotics-related crimes; I heard the war on drugs causes mass incarceration; and I heard mostly young black males are incarcerated. None of these things are true. This short post is to provide accurate numbers as to what type of offender is housed in California prisons. This data comes from the latest available numbers, June 2025.
California Prisoner Commitment Offenses:
Most California inmates are in prison for harming or killing another person. Only a very small number are incarcerated for non-violent crimes.
- 15.6% for Assault or Battery
- 14.4% for Murder
- 12.7% for Robbery
- 10.6% for Lewd Acts with a Child
- 10.3% for Assault with a Deadly Weapon
- 6.5% for Murder in the 2nd
- 3.0% for Rape
- 2.1% for Other Sex Crimes
- 0.9% for Forced Oral Copulation
- 0.9% for Sale or Possession for Sale of Controlled Substances
- 0.8% for Possession of Controlled Substances
California Prison Demographics:
A majority California inmates are Hispanic males 26-49 years old. Black inmates are overrepresented when compared to civilian population (27% vs 5.4%).
