The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) released the February 2026 numbers for incidents.
In February 2026 there were 390 recorded incidents of CDCR inmates attacking staff. This number is down from January, which reported 402 incidents of inmates attacking staff.
Although the February number of incidents is down, there continues an upward trend of inmate violence against officers and other staff since the implementation of the California Model of prison management. Despite the declining number of inmates incarcerated in CDCR, the prisons have become much more violent for staff members. The California Model was officially implemented state-wide in March 2023 and since then there has been an upward trend of staff attacks.
