An inmate at Salinas Valley State Prison batters a peace officer unconscious

5.0.2

On Friday, October 17 at about 1530 hours Inmate Darryl Johnson (F74044) was being escorted from the showers to his cell. During the escort Johnson started hitting the escorting officer in the head and slammed the officers’ head into multiple metal doors. After the officer lost the ability to stand, Inmate Johnson continued to punch the officer in the head until responding officers arrived and used physical force to gain control of the inmate.

The primary officer lost consciousness and had multiple face/head injuries from the attack and was taken to an outside hospital. Two other officers were injured trying to gain control of Inmate Johnson and were also taken to an outside hospital for treatment.

Just about every day multiple California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation staff are attacked by inmates. We appreciate the many reports but can only post the more serious incidents.
