Attempted homicide of a San Quentin Rehabilitation Center Officer

On July 18, at approximately 1100 hours, at the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center (SQRC) a correctional officer’s baton was taken from him by an inmate as the inmate stabbed slashed the officer with an improvised knife.

Inside of a SQRC housing unit, Inmate Ezekiel Gonzalez (V28813) attacked Inmate Ronnie Lewis (BE5043) with an improvised weapon. An officer observed the altercation and responded with his baton in his hand. Inmate Gonzalez forcibly grabbed the baton from the officer and used the improvised knife to stab the officer in the neck. The officer was able to fend off further attacks by the inmate by punching Gonzalez several times.

The officer was taken to an outside hospital where he received stitches for the stab wound to his neck. Inmate Gonzalez was rehoused into the Restricted Housing Unit.

One inmate-manufactured weapon was recovered from the scene.
