On Tuesday, July 29, at the California State Prison, Sacramento, an inmate attacked several correctional officers with an inmate-manufactured weapon.
At about 1430 hours, Inmate Calvin Robinson (BG1121) covered up his cell windows prohibiting required wellness checks by staff. Officers in the housing unit and a Sergeant obtained a riot shield and formed a team to slightly open the cell door and ascertain the status of Inmate Robinson. When the officers opened the cell door, Robinson rushed the officers with an inmate-manufactured stabbing weapon. Robinson also used his body to slam into the officer holding the riot shield.
Several officers received minor injuries while attempting to subdue Robinson. One officer was struck in the hand by the weapon wielded by the inmate. The officers were able to quell the incident and secure Robinson into restraints. The weapon was recovered from the scene.
Inmate Robinson allegedly covered up his cell knowing custody staff would be required to check on him and used this policy in his plan to murder any officer responding to his cell. Fortunately the staff had a plan and riot shield in place.
There were several other inmate attacks on CSP Sac staff on this date, and almost every day. There are too many staff attacks in CDCR to report on every incident; although we appreciate receiving reports from concerned people, we can only report on selected cases. Please stay safe out there and watch your partner’s back.

I used to work at Sac and the inmates take advantage of our policy. Especially after they know we are carrying body cameras on us it limits our response and creates a very poor work environment for the officers
I work at a prison with AVSS, some of the cameras have audio recording. We don’t have body cams though. I don’t think the cameras limit our responses, we just have to remember to sound professional and not cuss so much.
Cameras have saved me from false accusations from inmates several times. I have never been caught-up because of the cameras.
