It took more time than normal for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) to release its statistical accounting for the month of July of 2025. The numbers, released three days ago, show many staff attacks by the inmate population, but the numbers seem wrong to many who work for the agency.

CDCR reported only 370 acts of physical violence against staff by inmates last July. According to several sources, this number seems too low. Comparing numbers, CDCR had a partial lock-down of the inmate population in the month of June yet reported more (411) physical acts of violence towards staff.

One correctional sergeant who works for CDCR stated the reported numbers must have been “doctored” by the department because he has seen reports of many more staff attacks then CDCR reports. The Instagram account CDCRfiredup made an allegation this week that the information released by CDCR contains far fewer reports of inmate violence than is the reality.

Despite the potential underreporting by CDCR, the number of inmate violence directed towards staff is still alarming, especially considering the declining inmate population. The nine attempted murders of correctional officers by inmates reported in the month of July is very alarming during a time when CDCR management is reducing the security posture of the prisons.

In a time when CDCR is still restructuring the department under the “California Model” of prison management, there have been at least 42 attempts by CDCR inmates to kill correctional officers in the past year.

  1. Is it even a question that CDCR “doctored” its numbers? Of course those numbers mean nothing

Are they ever accurate? That’s a big negative Houston.
