Authorities have lifted restrictions at nine California prisons, while twelve others remain under lockdown due to ongoing violence. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) announced the partial rollback on Thursday. These measures were initially imposed in response to a surge in violence, overdoses, and contraband, affecting approximately 34,000 inmates since June 12.
Since then, correctional staff have recovered a significant amount of contraband, causing the agency to restore normal operations at nine institutions and partially lift restrictions at three others.
Officials say the searches uncovered:
- 169 improvised weapons
- 310 cellular devices
- 55 hypodermic needles
- Nearly 800 additional items, including controlled substances, drug paraphernalia, and escape-related materials.
Inmates remain on lockdown at High Desert State Prison; Pelican Bay State Prison; Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison, Corcoran; California State Prison, Los Angeles County; California State Prison, Sacramento; California State Prison, Centinela; Calipatria State Prison; Kern Valley State Prison; Mule Creek State Prison; Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility; Salinas Valley State Prison and Sierra Conservation Camp.
