On December 12, at about 0130 in the morning Inmate Rafael Fabian (AX9859) was a recent arrival at Salinas Valley State Prison. When Fabian reached his housing unit, the officers conducted a routine pat-down search. During the search Fabian attacked the staff by jumping on one of the officers. The officers were able to force Fabian to the ground while he still resisted and kicked at the officers.
Eventually officers were able to subdue Fabian and conducted their search revealing an inmate-manufactured handcuff key (escape paraphernalia) and an inmate-manufactured slashing instrument (razor attached to a handle). These items were hidden in the inmate’s medical wrist brace.
Staff members received minor injuries. Inmate Fabian was rehoused into the Restricted Housing Unit.
