California State Prison, Sacramento inmate threatened staff and found to be holding a weapon

On December 10, at about 1930 hours, at the California State Prison, Sacramento, Inmate Dawan Harris (BX1747) was being escorted back to his assigned housing unit when he threatened the escorting officer. Harris told the officer he was going to “get” him. Staff ordered Harris to go to his assigned cell while the inmate refused, walking instead towards the recreation yard.

Staff called for backup and when confronted with several officers, Harris gave up and laid down on the yard. When officers placed Harris in restraints, they found the inmate had an improvised stabbing weapon. Despite being caught with the weapon, Harris continued to passively resist staff by not allowing staff to move him.

Inmate Harris continued to cause problems with custody staff when at about 2300 hours he refused to leave the prison medical facility. Despite staff attempting to deescalate the situation Harris refused all orders and pleas to go back to his cell. Eventually staff were forced to place Harris on a rescue litter (backboard) and carry him to his cell.

No staff were reported injured.
