On Thursday, August 7, an inmate at Avenal State Prison used an improvised weapon to attack a civilian teacher.

At about 1140 hours, Inmate Michael Andrade (K85554) executed a planned attack on a teacher. The inmate entered the staff restroom, armed with an inmate-manufactured weapon and waited for the female academic instructor. When the teacher entered the restroom, Andrade jumped on her, grabbed her by the neck, and pushed the sharp weapon into her throat.

Despite the surprise attack, the teacher was able to activate her personal alarm and then break away from Inmate Andrade’s grasp. Another civilian educator heard the screams and responded to the staff restroom and aided the teacher. Andrade ran away but was later captured by custody staff as he attempted to leave the education workspace.

Andrade was rehoused into the Restricted Housing Unit.

  1. Kinda funny how they leave out so many details. But it would make line staff look bad. Typical CDCR LAZINESS. Where were the staff that were called and asked to come over. Never showed up then this happened. I’d sue the shit out of the department..
