Breaking News – Unknown substance at the California Institution for Women hospitalizes several inmates and staff

On January 20, 2026, The California Institution for Women had an unknown substance send many inmates and staff to the hospital. The prison, located in Corona, California activated its emergency plan and set-up an Incident Command Post to deal with the emergency.

Reports from staff state it is an airborne narcotic and Hazmat has been activated.

Update February 1, 2026: Over the last few days there have been several other staff members injured by this unknown substance at CIW to include one officer who passed out in the employee parking lot. CDCR is being very secretive about these incidents and not much information has come forward. We do know there was a secret meeting between some staff and CIW management about these staff injuries, but no information regarding that meeting has become public.
