Salinas Valley State Prison (SVSP) is investigating an attempted murder of multiple correctional officers by an inmate

On Jan. 23, at approximately 1421 hours, SVSP staff were conducting a controlled cell entry when Inmate Jose Chavez (AD5110) armed himself with a metal weapon and attacked staff as they entered the cell.

Four officers were injured during the incident and transported to an outside medical facility for treatment. The injuries were not life-threatening, and all officers are expected to make a full recovery.

Three inmate-manufactured weapons were recovered at the scene. No inmates were injured. The reason for the controlled entry was to conduct a cell search.

Inmate Chavez was placed in restricted housing pending an investigation by SVSP’s Investigative Services Unit.
